Winter on the Frisian Island

Winter on the Frisian Island

Tradition mandates to sail to Terschelling over Christmas and New Year. But this year, we were in Vlieland, just a few miles across the Vliestroom.

It was a proper winter – there was ice cracking when we left our berth in the morning. And the big lock doors at Kornwerderzand were covered by thick ice chunks. In contrast to Terschelling, there were only a handfull of boats in Vlieland. At the beach, there was a fierce wind blowing sand into our faces, making it hard to spot the seals napping. What a contrast to the busy summer months when hundreds of yachts are squeezed into the marina.

And when we were back in our homeberth, we woke to a world covered in snow.

Snow covers the deck of Coelacanth.
